Underground Superintendent

Our client is a privately owned gold miner with an active open pit gold operation in Laos. With a new underground development planned for Q1 of 2026 our client seeks to build the owners’ team to manage the national team and appointed contractor.

On behalf of our client MPI are seeking an experienced Underground Superintendent to support the growing owners’ team and upcoming underground development. 

As development of the underground mine has not yet commenced, you will initially play a critical role in assisting the Underground Manager in establishing and implementing the systems and processes required to support future operations. Once operational, you will act as the key link between the mine’s technical team and the Underground Mining Contractor to ensure daily activities are executed in line with mine plans and safety standards.

Key responsibilities: 
  • Act as a deputy to the Underground Manager during their absence
  • Support the development and promotion of a strong underground safety culture through leadership, systems, and standards
  • Oversee contractor performance in line with mine development, production schedules, and budget
  • Conduct regular underground inspections and ensure compliance with design specifications and contractor obligations
  • Monitor and manage contractor performance with a focus on safety, productivity, and accountability
  • Liaise with the contractor to ensure equipment maintenance supports planned availability and productivity targets
  • Uphold and adhere to all legal, regulatory, and company standards, including respect for the local culture and customs of the operating country.
The ideal candidate will have:
  •  Proven experience in underground mining operations in a senior leadership or superintendent role
  • Strong understanding of mine development processes, contractor management, and operational planning
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example in fostering a strong safety culture
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills, particularly in cross-cultural environments.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience operating in underground operations with a minimum 5 years leadership experience in a similar role
  • Preferred candidates from Australia or New Zealand
  • Bilingual capabilities would be highly regarded.
