Project Director - Ventilation & Cooling Upgrade

We are pleased to be partnering with a great client of ours to recruit an experienced Project Director to lead a major, site-critical Ventilation and Cooling Upgrade Project at a WA underground gold mining operation. This is a rare opportunity to step into a flagship, multi-hundred-million-dollar project at study stage and carry it through full delivery, with a clear pipeline into the next major capital program.

The scope comprises a complete overhaul of all ventilation and cooling infrastructure on site, broken into three integrated workstreams:
  • Electrical Infrastructure
  • Primary Ventilation, Boost Fans & Surface Drilling (including a ~1km bore to a new surface chiller plant, with all associated electrical, piping and ventilation reticulation)
  • Refrigeration & Underground Cooling Systems.
The role:
Reporting directly to the Project Delivery Manager, the Project Director will have overall accountability for closing out the study phase and then leading full project execution. Initially, the role will work closely with external engineering and design partners during the study phase, before transitioning to a principal-led delivery model once execution commences.

You will lead a team of 2-3 Area Managers, each responsible for one of the major scopes. While each scope is distinct, success relies on strong integration, sequencing and collaboration across all workstreams:
  • Provide overall leadership, governance and direction for project from study through to execution and completion
  • Drive alignment between engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activities
  • Manage and integrate three major delivery scopes through Area Managers
  • Act as the principal’s representative with EPCM partners, contractors and key stakeholders
  • Establish robust project controls, risk management and reporting frameworks
  • Ensure safety, schedule, cost and quality objectives are consistently met
  • Support a seamless transition into the next phase of capital works post-completion.
About you:
You will be a senior project leader with a strong background in large-scale underground mining infrastructure projects, ideally with exposure to ventilation, refrigeration, electrical or fixed plant systems. You bring structure, clarity and control to complex projects and are comfortable operating from study through to execution.

Key experience and attributes include:
  • Proven leadership on $200m+ mining or infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of underground ventilation, cooling or fixed infrastructure systems
  • Experience working with EPCM / engineering consultancies during study phases
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and manage interdependent scopes
  • Pragmatic, outcomes-focused leadership style with strong stakeholder management skills.
Location & roster:
  • Initially Perth office-based, transitioning to FIFO once delivery commences
  • Flexible roster options supported, with an expectation of consistent availability during critical project phases.
Unfortunately, MPI are only able to consider people with appropriate and relevant experience, and who are either Australian Permanent Residents or have the necessary permits to work in Australia and whom are currently in Australia.
