Senior Open Pit Geologist

If you enjoy contract work but are selective about the operations you join, this one is worth a look.

An opportunity has become available for an experienced Senior Open Pit Mine Geologist to join an established WA mining operation, covering a period of parental leave from November.

Initially offered as a three-month contract, there's genuine potential for extension beyond the initial term. You'll be joining a well-supported geology team with established processes, experienced colleagues, and a handover designed to set you up for success.

Reporting to the Geology Manager, you'll lead two geologists while remaining hands-on across the day-to-day technical and operational aspects of the mine geology function. The site operates an 8:6 FIFO roster from Perth, with charter flights into Laverton, and utilises Surpac, Leapfrog and Acquire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide geological support to a producing open pit operation
  • Lead and mentor a team of mine geologists
  • Oversee grade control and ore/waste delineation activities
  • Support geological modelling, interpretation and reconciliation
  • Maintain data quality and geological reporting standards
  • Work closely with Mining, Processing and Technical Services teams.

The operation behind this role is a well-established rare earths producer with a long mine life and ongoing investment in its future. Rare earths experience would be advantageous, but we're equally interested in speaking with geologists from gold or base metals backgrounds who can operate confidently in a senior production geology role.

About You:

  • Previous experience as a Senior Mine Geologist in an open pit environment
  • Strong grade control, ore control and reconciliation experience
  • Comfortable leading and mentoring site-based geologists
  • Experience with Surpac, Leapfrog and/or Acquire
  • Able to build strong working relationships across site teams
  • Ideally 5+ years' open pit mine geology experience.

Unfortunately, MPI Recruitment can only consider applicants with relevant qualifications and experience who are Australian Permanent Residents or hold valid working rights for Australia.
