The best (and craziest) work perks we’ve come across
With skills shortages impacting the mining industry, many employers are offering interesting incentives to attract workers.

With a very tight labour market and skills shortages impacting the mining industry long term, it’s no surprise many employers are offering some interesting incentives to attract workers.
Employees, well aware of the leverage this can give them when negotiating a new position, are also asking for some unusual, if not revolutionary, perks.
Some common mining industry employee incentives
In the mining industry, we’ve seen employers offer gym memberships and health insurance, as part of employee packages, which has the added benefit of improving overall employee physical and mental health.
Other incentives include remote area housing, novated leasing (which gives remote employees an affordable way to buy a vehicle), salary packaging for expenses like utilities bills or mortgage interest on home loans, additional superannuation contributions, and disability and income protection insurance.
At the lower end, but no less welcome, are airport lounge memberships, covering airport parking expenses, newspaper and magazine subscriptions and professional memberships.
Some of the crazier employee incentives out there
But is the industry getting creative enough? A recent article in the Daily Mail quoted Fantastic Framing boss Avi Efrat offering wild incentives to attract job applicants and build staff loyalty, including “skydiving sessions, racetrack laps in sports cars, fancy dinners and luxury weekend getaways”.
Elsewhere, companies are offering “no set hours” arrangements, unlimited annual leave, and referral bonuses to employees who help them find new staff (to the tune of $2000).
And some companies really go all out. Apple and Facebook famously offered to pay for egg-freezing services for their female employees. Chesapeake Energy in Canada offers botox injections. Other companies encourage employees to bring their dogs to work, offer pet insurance, encourage staff to go surfing at lunchtime, or pay for new clothes.
