The definition of geology is “the study of materials that make up the Earth, the features and structures found on Earth as well as the processes that act upon them”.
Forgive me; I don’t mean to offend any Geologists here — I appreciate the above statement is an incredibly basic definition of something incredibly complex. I think it is fair to say we all work in professions that are viewed differently from the outside than those on the inside know them truly to be.
For example, I often get the old “Oh, don’t you just find people jobs?” response when I disclose what I do for a living (which is probably the reason I don’t mention I work in recruitment any more). But if I took the time to explain it further, I would say I am responsible for having a thorough understanding of a vast array of positions and professions within the mining and resource sector. I’m responsible for knowing the importance of the candidates’ responsibilities, the expectation from their employers and the skills and qualifications those candidates need in order to achieve these expectations and be successful in what they do.
Having now worked in both internal and external recruitment for more than 11 years, I find the assumption that anyone is “just” anything is not only an insult to those in that line of work but also shows a blatant disregard for the efforts those professionals put into jobs on a day-to-day basis and how they contribute to their work environment. I certainly wouldn’t be doing Mining People or our clients any favours by sourcing just another Field Technician.
There are plenty of job seekers out there. A lot of them may match the skill level a company is after but, I know that it’s my job to make sure only the right candidate — one who will fit in well with a particular team, culture and environment — has their resume sent through to a prospective employer. I never want to send a client ‘just another’ anything. I always want to send the ‘perfect’ candidate — the one who ticks all the boxes.
And I think being able to do that is something setting the right recruiter apart from just another recruiter, too.
